Most Helpful Positive Review

I've worked in the construction, forestry, manufacturing, mining and agricultural industries. Growing up on the farm, I went through a lot of shoes. I've stepped on shingle nails, stood on grub stumps, stood on wet steel roofs, loaded dynamite, hauled poo and worked 10 hour shifts on the plasma table in these shoes. They handle it better than Redwings and WAAAY better than any cheap brand. I can put them through any abuse I want, and not have to worry about them falling apart. I've never had a pair last less than 2 years so far. It really doesn't matter much, but they look cool too. But if you're mining, get the waterproof version. Trust me, wet feet suck no matter what brand they are! lol

Caterpillar Alaska boots have been my boot of choice for many years. I decided to try the FX model, with the techniflex outsole. This did make the boots more comfortable out of the box. However this new sole is no where near as resilient as the original. Within months the sole wore through exposing the inner lining, which allowed water/oil/sand to enter the boot. In addition to allowing the elements in, the puncture resistance is severely reduced since the sole is now hollow. I would not recommend these boots for anything more than casual wear, as they do not provide much protection and wear resistance.

I really liked the looks of these boots-- the style of the laces gives it a look that fits work or play. They seem to be rugged and well made but they do not wear well. I've had them for about 3 weeks now so maybe they'll break in if I give them time. But, for whatever reason, after wearing them for 5-6 hours straight, my feet always hurt the next day, especially the sides running along my little toe. It takes a few days for the aching to go away. I'm not sure if it's because they seem to be narrower than other work boots I've worn over the years (I always wear a Medium size width) or if the techni-flex sole just doesn't work for me. I actually went with the higher priced version of this Alaska boot (I think it's called FX?) thinking they would be more comfortable. I wish I had gone for a more "traditional" work boot style like the Second Shift, Sheffield, or Gunnison styles.
